Wildlife & Wilderness
A safari-first journey through Sri Lanka's greatest national parks — leopards in Wilpattu and Yala, the Minneriya elephant gathering, Udawalawe's herds and blue whales off Mirissa.
Few places on earth pack this much wildlife into an island this size: the highest leopard density in the world, Asia's largest elephant gathering, sloth bears, crocodiles and the biggest animal that has ever lived cruising just offshore. This route strings the best of it together with expert trackers, well-timed game drives and comfortable lodges near every park gate.
Wilpattu → Sigiriya → Minneriya → Udawalawe → Yala → Mirissa

Day by day
- 1
Arrival & north to Wilpattu
Colombo Airport → Wilpattu
Meet your chauffeur and head up the northwest coast to the edge of Wilpattu National Park. Evening briefing with your tracker and an early night — the gates open at dawn.
- 2
Full day on safari in Wilpattu
Wilpattu National Park
A full-day game drive through Wilpattu's signature landscape of villus — natural rain-fed lakes ringed by dense jungle. The park's leopards and sloth bears are shyer than Yala's but the sightings are wilder and the crowds far thinner. Picnic lunch inside the park.
- 3
Sigiriya interlude
Wilpattu → Sigiriya
Cross to the Cultural Triangle and spend the afternoon climbing Sigiriya Rock Fortress, then watch the sun drop from Pidurangala. A rest day for the legs that still ends 200 metres above the jungle.
- 4
The Great Elephant Gathering
Sigiriya → Minneriya → Sigiriya
Morning at leisure — village tour, birding by the tank or simply the pool. At 3 p.m. your jeep rolls into Minneriya (or Kaudulla, wherever the herds are), for one of Asia's great wildlife spectacles: hundreds of elephants converging on the reservoir grasslands.
- 5
South to Udawalawe
Sigiriya → Udawalawe
A scenic driving day south through the hill country's eastern edge, waterfalls and rice country giving way to dry-zone plains. Arrive in time for the 6 p.m. feeding at the Elephant Transit Home, where orphaned calves are raised for release back to the wild.
- 6
Udawalawe plains & on to Yala
Udawalawe → Yala
Morning game drive across Udawalawe's open savannah — the most reliable place in Asia to watch large elephant herds at close range, plus water buffalo, jackals and raptors. Continue to Yala and settle in near the park gate.
- 7
Leopard day in Yala
Yala National Park
Two game drives — dawn and late afternoon — in Yala Block 1, home to the highest density of leopards on the planet. Between drives, siesta at the lodge. Alongside the big cats: elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, mongooses and 200+ bird species.
- 8
Whales of Mirissa & departure
Yala → Mirissa → Colombo Airport
An early transfer to Mirissa harbour swaps the jeep for a boat: a morning cruise among blue whales and spinner dolphins to complete the land-and-sea safari. Lunch on the beach, then the expressway to the airport. Prefer a slower ending? Add beach nights in Mirissa or Tangalle.
