The blue train crossing the Nine Arches Bridge in Ella

Grand Island Circuit

Our most popular route: the full classic circuit plus a leopard safari in Yala and blue-whale watching off Mirissa — culture, hills, wildlife and beach in ten perfectly paced days.

Ten days is the sweet spot for Sri Lanka. This circuit adds the two experiences most seven-day trips have to skip — a dawn game drive in Yala, home of the world's densest leopard population, and a morning among blue whales off Mirissa — while keeping the icons: Sigiriya, Kandy, the tea train and Galle Fort.

Sigiriya → Polonnaruwa → Kandy → Nuwara Eliya → Ella → Yala → Mirissa → Galle

Trip highlights

  • Sigiriya at sunrise and the ruins of Polonnaruwa by bicycle
  • Tea-factory tour and a night among the estates of Nuwara Eliya
  • The famous blue train from the hills down into Ella
  • Dawn 4×4 safari tracking leopards in Yala National Park
  • Blue whales and spinner dolphins off the Mirissa coast
  • Sunset walk on the ramparts of Galle Fort

Day by day

  1. 1

Arrival & first night in the Triangle

    Colombo Airport → Sigiriya

Airport meet-and-greet and a comfortable drive into the Cultural Triangle. Evening at leisure — pool, ayurvedic massage or a first king-coconut by the paddy fields.

  2. 2

    Sigiriya Rock & village lunch

    Sigiriya

Beat the heat with a sunrise ascent of the Lion Rock, then trade monuments for village life: a catamaran ride, a bullock cart and a clay-pot curry lunch cooked over an open fire. Sunset from Pidurangala Rock, camera ready.

  3. 3

    Polonnaruwa & the ancient reservoirs

    Sigiriya → Polonnaruwa → Sigiriya

Cycle the ruined 12th-century capital of Polonnaruwa — palaces, dagobas and the four carved Buddhas of Gal Vihara. On the drive back, stop at the Minneriya or Kaudulla reservoir (season depending) for an afternoon elephant safari.

  4. 4

    Kandy, the hill capital

    Sigiriya → Matale → Kandy

South via the Matale spice gardens to Kandy. Wander the lakeside old town, catch a traditional Kandyan dance performance and join the evening puja at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.

  5. 5

    Into the tea country

    Kandy → Nuwara Eliya

Climb into the central highlands past waterfalls and endless tea terraces. Tour a working tea factory, taste single-estate Ceylon at the source and stroll colonial-era Nuwara Eliya — 'Little England' at 1,900 metres.

  6. 6

The world's most scenic train ride

    Nanu Oya → Ella

Ride the blue train from Nanu Oya to Ella, widely called the most beautiful stretch of railway on earth. Doors open, wind in your hair, tea pluckers waving from the slopes. Evening in Ella's easy-going café scene.

  7. 7

    Ella to leopard country

    Ella → Yala

Sunrise on Little Adam's Peak and a walk to the Nine Arches Bridge before descending to the dry southern plains. Arrive at your hotel on the edge of Yala National Park for an early night — tomorrow starts before dawn.

  8. 8

Yala safari & on to the coast

    Yala → Mirissa

A 5 a.m. gate entry gives you Yala at its wildest — leopards on the rocks, elephants in the lagoons, crocodiles, sloth bears and peacocks everywhere. After brunch, roll west along the coast to Mirissa for your first swim in the Indian Ocean.

  9. 9

    Blue whales & beach time

    Mirissa

Morning whale-watching cruise in search of blue whales — the largest animals ever to live — plus fin whales, spinner dolphins and sea turtles. Afternoon on the sand, sunset at Coconut Tree Hill.

  10. 10

    Galle Fort & farewell

Mirissa → Galle → Colombo Airport

End inside the walls of Galle Fort: rampart walks, the lighthouse, Dutch-era churches and boutique shopping in restored merchant houses. The southern expressway then whisks you to the airport for departure.
