Palm trees over the golden beach at Mirissa

South Coast Beach Escape

Six days of golden sand, whales and fort-town charm along Sri Lanka's south coast — Galle, Unawatuna, Mirissa, Weligama and the quiet crescent beaches of Tangalle.

6 days / 5 nightsPrivate — 1 to 10 travellersFrom USD 840 per person

No early alarms, no long drives — just the south coast done properly. Base yourself between the living museum of Galle Fort and a string of the island's best beaches, with a blue-whale cruise, a surf lesson and long barefoot evenings built in. Perfect as a stand-alone week or bolted onto any tour.

Galle → Unawatuna → Mirissa → Weligama → Tangalle

  • Stay inside the UNESCO-listed ramparts of Galle Fort

  • Sunset at Coconut Tree Hill, the south's most photographed palms
  • A visit to a community turtle hatchery on the coast road

Day by day

  1. 1

    Arrival & into the fort

    Colombo Airport → Galle

The southern expressway makes short work of the transfer — under three hours from the airport to the cobbled lanes of Galle Fort. Check into a boutique stay inside the walls and take your first sunset walk on the ramparts past the lighthouse.

  2. 2

    Galle Fort & Unawatuna

    Galle → Unawatuna

Morning exploring the fort: the Dutch Reformed Church, the maritime museum, gem workshops and café-hopping through restored merchant houses. Afternoon at Unawatuna's banana-shaped bay and the jungle-fringed Jungle Beach, with the Japanese Peace Pagoda at golden hour.

  3. 3

    Whales of Mirissa

    Mirissa

Sail out of Mirissa harbour at dawn in search of blue whales, fin whales and playful spinner-dolphin pods — some of the best whale watching on the planet, just a few kilometres offshore. The rest of the day is pure beach, ending at Coconut Tree Hill for sunset.

  4. 4

    Learn to surf in Weligama

    Weligama → Mirissa

Weligama's long, gentle beach break is one of the world's friendliest places to learn to surf — a private lesson has most beginners standing within the hour. Refuel at a beach café, watch the stilt fishermen at Koggala, and spend the evening back in Mirissa.

  5. 5

    Secret beaches of Tangalle

    Mirissa → Tangalle

Drift east to Tangalle, where the crowds thin out and the coves turn wild — Silent Beach, Goyambokka and palm-backed crescents you'll often have to yourself. Stop at a turtle hatchery en route; after dark, a naturalist can lead a turtle-nesting walk in season.

  6. 6

    Slow morning & departure

    Tangalle → Colombo Airport

One last swim and a long breakfast before the drive back to the airport — or extend your stay: Yala National Park is only an hour further east, and we can add a safari night on request.
