Two weeks lets Sri Lanka breathe. This grand tour covers everything the shorter circuits do and adds the places they can't reach — the 2,300-year-old sacred city of Anuradhapura, the misty grasslands of Horton Plains and World's End, and proper time to do nothing at all on the southwest beaches before you fly.

   Arrival & Negombo

   Colombo Airport → Negombo

   Land, meet your chauffeur and unwind in the beach town of Negombo, ten minutes from the airport — a gentle first evening of seafood, canals and Indian Ocean sunset before the journey begins.

   The sacred city of Anuradhapura

   Negombo → Anuradhapura

   Drive north into the ancient heartland. Anuradhapura was a thriving capital for 1,300 years: colossal white dagobas, monastery ruins and the Sri Maha Bodhi — grown from a cutting of the tree under which the Buddha reached enlightenment, and tended continuously for over 2,300 years.

   Dambulla caves & Pidurangala sunset

   Anuradhapura → Sigiriya

   Continue to Sigiriya via the painted cave temples of Dambulla. In the evening, an easy scramble up Pidurangala Rock delivers the postcard view of Sigiriya glowing in the sunset.

   Sigiriya Rock & village life

   Sigiriya

   The classic sunrise ascent of the Lion Rock, then an afternoon village experience — catamaran, bullock cart and a home-cooked curry feast — or time by the pool. Optional hot-air balloon flight over the Triangle in season.

   Polonnaruwa & the elephant gathering

   Sigiriya → Polonnaruwa → Sigiriya

   Cycle the medieval ruins of Polonnaruwa in the morning, and spend the golden hours on a jeep safari at Minneriya or Kaudulla, watching wild elephant herds cross the reservoir plains.

   Kandy, the last kingdom

   Sigiriya → Matale → Kandy

   Travel south via Matale's spice gardens. In Kandy — seat of the island's last kings — visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic for the evening puja and catch a fire-and-drum Kandyan dance performance.

   Gardens & tea country

   Kandy → Nuwara Eliya

   Morning in the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens, then the beautiful climb to Nuwara Eliya past the Ramboda falls. Tour a working tea factory and taste estate-fresh Ceylon before an evening stroll through the colonial townscape.

   Horton Plains & World's End

   Nuwara Eliya → Horton Plains → Nuwara Eliya

   A dawn start for Horton Plains National Park: a 9 km loop across misty montane grasslands to World's End, where the plateau simply stops — an 870-metre sheer drop with views to the south coast on a clear morning — and back past Baker's Falls.

   The blue train to Ella

   Nanu Oya → Ella

   Ride the most scenic stretch of railway on earth from Nanu Oya down to Ella. Check into a view-first hotel and spend the evening among the town's cafés with the Ella Gap glowing below.

    Ella adventures

    Ella

    Sunrise on Little Adam's Peak, the walk to Nine Arches Bridge for the mid-morning train, and a swim beneath a waterfall. Feeling brave? The Flying Ravana zipline runs 500 metres over the tea fields.

    Leopards of Yala

    Ella → Yala

    Descend to the southern savannah for an afternoon game drive in Yala Block 1 — leopards, elephants, sloth bears and crocodile-filled lagoons — returning to your lodge as the peacocks call in the dusk.

    Whales & the fort city

    Yala → Mirissa → Galle

    An early transfer to Mirissa for a blue-whale cruise, lunch on the beach, then along the coast to Galle Fort for rampart walks, boutique shopping and dinner inside the 17th-century walls.

    Beach day in Bentota

    Galle → Bentota

    Nothing scheduled — and that's the point. Golden-sand beaches, optional river safari on the Madu Ganga mangroves, a visit to the Kosgoda turtle hatchery, or an ayurvedic spa afternoon.

    Colombo & departure

    Bentota → Colombo → Airport

    One last swim, then a short city tour of Colombo — the old Dutch Hospital, Gangaramaya Temple and Galle Face Green — before your airport drop-off with two weeks of the whole island behind you.
